Preserve Communities: In the Heart of Western North Carolina

It’s been said that you can’t compare the North Carolina Mountains to heaven because it wouldn’t be fair to the latter. Surely few places on earth are as impressive as the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville—they are at once rooted in the earth some one billion years, yet stretch upward toward celestial realms beyond the confines of time. To see them is to fall in love. Perhaps that’s why so many families have chosen to call this area home. For in addition to offering spellbinding majesty and beauty, these hills offer a gold mine of natural attractions, scenic wonders, and cultural enticements. Buncombe and Madison counties are the gateways to a variety of recreational pursuits, outdoor adventure, and charming destinations. Best of all, both of our communities—French Broad Crossing and The Preserve at Little Pine—are in the center of it all. Your gateway to a mountain living experience that is as rewarding as it is nuanced and varied.

SO MUCH TO DISCOVER

Charming small towns

Marshall, Hot Springs, and Weaverville are quintessential mountain towns, each distinctive in their own unique way, and filled with a mix of quaint shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, coffee houses, music venues, friendly townsfolk, and infinite charm.

Downtown Asheville

A mere 30 minutes away, Asheville is consistently named one of the nation’s leading destinations for its dynamic mix of cultural attractions, outdoor recreation, special events and entertainment, fine and casual dining, boutique shopping, art and theater, and so much more.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

America’s favorite road passes right through these mountains, just outside of Asheville and a quick jaunt from the town of Marshall. Some of the best views and scenic hikes are located along this stretch of the Parkway.

The Biltmore House

Visit America’s largest home. Completed in 1895, George Vanderbilt’s 250-room chateau is as impressive today as it was more than a century ago. The grand 8,000-acre estate includes lavish gardens, a full-scale winery, and an elegance and charm that is unequaled anywhere else.

Pisgah National Forest

Picture hiking, waterfalls, camping, and forested trails with stunning views sprinkled about. The 500,000+ acres of the Pisgah National Forest surrounding Asheville feature some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring mountain scenery around—not to mention some of the best recreational opportunities in eastern North America.

Lake Louise

Located in the nearby town of Weaverville, Lake Louise Park encompasses approximately 15.5 acres, the centerpiece of which is a five-acre, man-made lake. The park features a Community Center, playground, outdoor exercise equipment, picnic shelters, a walking track, grills, and of course, great fishing.

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort

Just minutes from Asheville, The Wolf offers skiing and snowboarding fun for the whole family. With a peak elevation of 4,700 feet, the resort has 54 acres of skiable terrain, 100% snow-making capability, 15 lighted runs (with 1 double lift), 1 quad lift, and 2 surface lifts. The more adventurous can test their skill on one of two black diamond runs.

Laurel River Fly Fishing

Just 15 minutes from Marshall, Laurel River is one of the best regional fly-fishing rivers in Western North Carolina. (And also one of the most underrated.) Located in a beautifully forested region, Laurel River provides a 10-mile stretch of water with easy roadside access. Depending on the time of year, the Laurel can be stocked with plenty of healthy fish.

The French Broad River

The mighty French Broad is the third oldest river in the world—and one of the few that flows north. Spending a summer day rafting, fishing, or along the shores is a one-of-a-kind experience filled with equal parts wonder and excitement.

French Broad Adventures

These folks hook you up with all the adventure these mountains and this river affords, including whitewater rafting, zipline canopy tours, calm water float trips, you name it. They can even combine ziplining and rafting into a single day to make sure you get your fill. And they are the only raft / zip combo close to Asheville.

Max Patch

The views, the wildflowers, the rolling bald hills….Max Patch is one-of-a-kind. And just a short drive from Preserve Communities. The Appalachian Trail cuts right through the Patch near Hot Springs, peaking out at 4,600 feet atop a high knob that affords 360-degree views that are spectacular no matter what the time of year. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Mitchell to the east and the Great Smoky Mountains to the south.
