Extended Honeymoon at FBC

FBC is the perfect marriage of nature and community

It all began on their honeymoon. When Jean and Fred White got married in 1983, they spent their honeymoon in Western North Carolina near Lake Lure. They were so taken with the beauty and natural wonder of the area that they agreed to move here, “one day.” After many return visits to the region— as newlyweds and later with kids—the Whites finally turned their dream into a reality at French Broad Crossing (FBC). “It was always our goal to retire in the North Carolina Mountains,” says Jean. “Of course, we both still work, but we have moved here full time and love that we can enjoy living our dream even before we actually retire.”

Two sisters, two homes, one community

The Whites spent years exploring property in Lake Lure and throughout the Asheville area, visiting quite a few communities. As for FBC, they discovered it on a Google search. “Fred stumbled on their website one day and we were drawn to what it had to offer,” says Jean. “We felt it was worth a closer look.” As it turned out, she wasn’t alone—her sister was also interested in the community and the two decided in 2006 over spring break that they would take their families on a vacation to Western North Carolina and visit the property firsthand. “One look was all it took,” says Jean. “Once we walked the property and saw the river, the mountains, and the views, we were hooked. My sister actually bought her home first—and then a week later, Fred and I bought our lot.”

Mountain living in Asheville’s premier river community

Jean and Fred lived in Ohio for most of their lives. “We were in northeast Ohio and quite happy there,” says Jean, “but once we went to Western North Carolina on our honeymoon, living in those mountains became our lifelong goal. We love the outdoor lifestyle, the natural beauty, and the fact that French Broad Crossing allows you to enjoy all of it.” FBC is the only master-planned community on the French Broad to offer direct access to the river, in a section that has calm waters, with a scenic beachfront that’s ideal for fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking, rafting, or simply swimming. “Perhaps more than anything, we love hearing the river,” says Jean. “It’s a comforting presence, always in the background, reminding us how lucky we are to live in this incredible conservation community.”

A place to celebrate with family and friends

One of the best things about Preserve Communities is that they give families the right mix of privacy and community. Inside the gates is a world of solitude and privilege that grants access to all of nature’s wonders and enticements—this is particularly relevant in a world that is increasingly urban and fast-paced, around the clock. Equally important is the ability to have a true sense of community with individuals who not only value nature, but camaraderie with friends and family. “We love the sense of community here,” says Jean. “We have made some really good friends. And that’s important since we moved here full time. To find others at French Broad Crossing who value nature and enjoy social gatherings and get-togethers has been wonderful. In fact, we love this community so much that we just had our son’s wedding here in August. We couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate such an important day with our family and friends. It truly was special for everyone.”
