The culturally sophisticated Western North Carolina town beat out 2) Boston MA, 3) Salinas GA, 4) Portland OR, and 5) Portland MA. According to the poll requirements, cities were judged on a number of criteria, factoring in restaurants, coffee shops, museums, florists, breweries, bed-and-breakfasts, specialty grocery stores, bookstores, and bakeries.
