Khan Family Moves into their New Home on the River

Q&A with French Broad Crossing homeowners Jamie & Beth Khan

Not too long ago we wrote a blog about the Khan family buying a homesite at French Broad Crossing . It was a beautiful lot in a great location, with clear direct views and frontage of the French Broad River, and a short walk to The River Park Pavilion, a popular gathering spot on the banks of the ancient river. Jamie and Beth Khan, along with their two young daughters live in Charleston, SC. While the family loves the beach, Jamie and Beth dreamed of having a mountain vacation home in Western North Carolina—a place they could drive to during the summer, on long weekends, and over the holidays. That dream became a reality, as their new mountain home was completed last fall. Masterfully built by Living Stone Design & Build, with interior design by ID.ology, the Khans look forward to spending lots of time on the banks of the French Broad River.

Q: Jamie, congratulations on your new home.
A: Thank you, we are very excited. It feels so wonderful to be in our new mountain home. From the day we first saw French Broad Crossing, and stood up at the Lodge overlooking the river, we knew this was the place for us.

Q: It’s absolutely beautiful, inside and out. Tell us about the building process, how it all came to life.
A: We chose Living Stone because we liked their work and they had a lot of experience in this area, and at French Broad Crossing specifically. The overall process went remarkably well, especially given that we were 4.5 hours away and could not be there in-person to oversee the progress on a weekly basis. We put a tremendous amount of trust in them and they came through on everything they promised. I attribute that to Living Stone’s work philosophy and their professionalism.

Q: What did you tell them before they built, did you convey a vision or plan.
A: Well, we liked some of the homes they had built in the area and picked out one or two designs that we felt would work for us. We liked that we could customize their plans to make it fit our needs. The river actually became central to the design. We really wanted to feel and hear the presence of the river so we designed around that – from the way the house sits on the lot to the windows and porches to the granite used in the kitchen.

Q: How about your children? How do they like the house?
A: They love it. The second floor is basically all theirs to play and hang out. Their room has bunk beds which they love, and plenty windows that allows for a lot of natural light. We really want the girls to be outside, exploring, playing, unplugged, not sitting around inside on electronic devices. Our youngest already has built a fairy house at the bottom of a multi-trunk tree. French Broad Crossing is about us getting out in nature and being active.

Q: I will also say that the interior of the home is fantastic. I love the furniture choices and colors. Did you guys choose all that yourself?
A: The designers at ID.ology were extremely helpful navigating the look and feel of the home. Their guidance really helped accentuate the beauty and majesty of this incredible mountain setting. Since they know the area better than we do they were able to use local craftsmen who they personally know and trust. One of the reasons we chose Living Stone was because they work directly with ID.ology so when the home was being conceived, we had all the parties involved collaborating, working together, so that the concept-design-build all came together seamlessly. We couldn’t be happier. It is the perfect mountain home for our family.

Q: Aside from the design and build, what do you like best about your new mountain home?
A: We love the setting; the view is breathtaking. We chose this lot carefully because it is about 50 yards from the river, has panoramic views of the river and you can hear the water flowing over the rapids. We have an easy walk to the River Park Pavilion, which gives us access to the private beach and the water. This was our goal from day one: let’s have a mountain home that gets us outdoors and away from the Charleston summer heat. We couldn’t be happier.
